Multi-Color Corporation is looking for a Product Development Engineer. This person will develop new products and technology in response to customer needs and requests. Serve as a technical support to internal and external customers. Work to build in quality and safety up front, review each product from a risk management standpoint and seek improvements in materials and processes, which will result in an efficient and profitable company.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop new products and technology to meet Multi-Color Corporation’s market objective and our customer’s needs.
  • Improve internal production processes, which will result in improved quality, production efficiency, and additional profits.
  • Work with suppliers to better understand their products and how they can benefit Multi-Color Corporation.
  • Meet with customers to better understand their needs.
  • Schedule and conduct trials with plants assistance and be on site during trials.
  • Provide comprehensive follow-up on all trials and complete technical trial documents.
  • Qualify new materials, inks, adhesives, and coatings.
  • Serve as a technical resource to Multi-Color Corporation customers and all members of teams.
  • Participate in joint sales calls with sales force.
  • Attend trade shows and seminars to keep current in the industry.
  • Record data in professional format to allow for swift and accurate retrieval.
  • Build in quality and productivity with new products.
  • Maintain project files.
  • Apply risk management practices to all work done.
  • Approve all trials prior to entry and shipment.
  • Conduct testing to select the right adhesive for the right product.
  • Review all projects for liability status. Review projects with VP of Innovations/Engineering and/or Corporate Counsel that may expose Multi-Color Corporation to undue risk.
  • Actively pursue self-development to continuously improve performance and prepare for additional challenges.
  • Design new products in response to the promotional marketplace.
  • Keep safety as a forefront in all projects; do not override safe guards on equipment.
  • Perform testing and other quality methodology such as Design of Experiments as required to validate product fit, form, and function.
  • Follow up on projects after they become production orders to insure proper press speeds are being obtained and quality standards are being met.
  • Manage reports to insure they are meeting expectations.
  • Perform a yearly review with reports

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is preferred.
  •  A minimum of 5 years production floor experience in the printing industry.
  •  Requires previous technical resource experience.
  •  Microsoft Office – Excel, Word, Projects, and Outlook.
  •  Must have experience in manufacturing processes, procedures and techniques, quality systems and standards.
  • Must have knowledge of machines, tools, and technology as well as business and management practices and principles.



Preferred Skills:

  • Must be technically sound in both Engineering and Printing/Packaging principles.
  • Must have a drive to succeed.
  • Must be a team player
  •  Ability to manage multiple tasks and coordinate priorities simultaneously; good time management, planning and organizing skills.
  •  Strong written and verbal communication skills to facilitate conversations with suppliers, co-workers, management, sales, customers, and subordinates.
  •  Promote a working environment that encourages employee involvement to achieve operational excellence.
  •  Ability to make independent and sound decisions based on available information.
  •  Experience with critical thinking, creative problem solving and strong influential skills is highly desired.
  •  Ability to analyze data to identify trends, areas for opportunity, and to determine needed changes.
  •  Understanding of Flexographic and Offset printing.
  • Understanding of Pressure sensitive labels, shrink labels, unsupported films, and other materials.


Physical Demands:

Works in a manufacturing environment and will be required to wear hearing, foot, and/or other personal protective equipment while performing duties in a manufacturing setting.  May, on a continuous basis, stand for a long period of time and stoop and kneel frequently.  May handle, feel and reach for items in and around press area, also write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means.  Some walking and lifting and/or move up to 50 lbs. may be required. Vision:  close vision, distance and color vision to distinguish color variations, peripheral and depth perception as well as the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually medium to loud. Must be flexible to work varying schedules and hours as needed.  Must be able to work overtime as required by workload and customer-mandated deadlines.
